To celebrate the birth of his daughter Catherine in 1954, Paul Rand
painted this multi–colored design on the door to her nursery. The color
arrangement, although carefully planned, gives the impression at
first glance of a random pattern. The design is, therefore, more interesting,
more lively, and perhaps, more inviting than a simple repeat pattern
would be. Adding to its effectiveness is the element of surprise, since it is
the only door in its architectural setting that is so patterned.
In order to retain the color fidelity of the original Kodachrome, this
image was printed on a dull coated paper. The dull finish, particularly when
used in large areas, helps to reduce eye strain by cutting down sheen.
